Umno has no option, must follow grassroots' wishes
SHAH ALAM - Umno no longer has an option but to follow the wishes of the grassroots voters in placing candidates in the states involved in the state elections soon.
Umno Wanita information chief Datuk Rosni Zahari said it was time for the party's leadership to consider the views of its supporters as an effort to win their hearts and provide victory for Umno and the unity government.
“Umno no longer has a choice other than following the wishes of the voters. Prepared or not, Umno must accept the changes.
“Umno is a party that is open and we welcome views from the public. We have done our best and if given a chance, we will perform to the best of our abilities.
“During the 15th General Election (GE15), we see the public rejecting Umno, we are still conducting a post-mortem to see where did we go wrong,” she said during the Wacana Sinar Siri 402 programme entitled ‘State Polls: The Suspense Awaiting Dissolution’ aired live on all Sinar Harian digital platforms, today.
Other panellists on the programme were Bersatu information committee member Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Nasir Saludin and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Youth information chief Haziq Azfar Ishak.
Rosni said she was of the view that the question of rejection of Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was not raised within the party and its representatives agreed to the motion of 'no contest' for the top two positions in Umno, recently.
“That’s why Zahid remained as president and we respect the representatives’ decision.
“Indirectly, that is the choice (of representatives) and it is part of the process in choosing the grassroots leadership,” he said.
