SHAH ALAM - Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says that the investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is carried out in a professional manner without any political elements.

The Prime Minister said his instructions were clear that the anti-graft agency must carry out its duty based on facts and in accordance with the law.

He said investigations by bodies such as the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), MACC, Bank Negara and the police should not be questioned.

"We must look at the facts. If it was committed while (a person) was in power and (the person) abused the power to award contracts to their children, family members and cronies as well as to enrich themselves, do not question the investigation and say that it is a political accusation.

"There are no clear explanations on the wealth and distribution of the money," he said in the Dewan Negara, today.

The Prime Minister was answering to a question by Datuk Kesavadas A Achyuthan Nair about MACC's investigation on corruption and abuse of power involving Dr Mahathir.

On Saturday, the MACC said it will thoroughly look into a corruption case involving the awarding of a RM214.2 million fiber optic contract to a company linked to Dr Mahathir.

Anwar added that members of the Dewan Negara should be responsible and remain positive over the issue.
