Quran burning: Unemployed man ordered to take mental examination

KUALA TERENGGANU - The Sessions Court here today ordered an unemployed man who was accused of burning the Quran and prayer mats in a mosque to undergo a psychiatric evaluation at a hospital.

Judge Nooriah Osman ruled on the matter after approving deputy public prosecutor Hanis Nabihah Hizamul-Din's request for Mohd Ridzuan Mohd Kamal, 33, to undergo an examination in accordance with Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The accused previously pleaded not guilty to the charge of burning the Quran and prayer mats at a mosque in Batu Rakit, Kuala Nerus.

The accused was charged with burning four copies of the Quran and three prayer mats.

He allegedly committed the act at a hemodialysis centre located at the same location at about 10.50am on June 12.

The accused was charged under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentence of 14 years or a fine if convicted.

The court had set July 26 for re-mention of the case while waiting for the psychiatric report from Permai Hospital, Tampoi, in Johor Bahru.
