Increase shelters on highways for motorcyclists - Lee Lam Thye
FARHANA ABD KADIRSHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) needs to increase the number of places for motorcyclists to take shelter during rainy days or bad weather.
Ikatan Komuniti Selamat (Alliance for a Safe Community) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the difficulty faced by motorcyclists to take cover during rainy weather can lead to accidents.
"I would like to suggest LLM and Lebuhraya PLUS to increase the number of facilities for motorcyclists to take cover.
"Difficulty in finding shelters can expose them to accidents," he told Sinar.
Previously, three motorcyclists had died while three others were injured, one of them seriously injured, after they were hit by a car driven by a drunk driver while taking shelter from the rain under a flyover at Kilometre 19.6 of the Klang Valley New Expressway (southbound) of NKVE Highway near here.
The incident reportedly happened at 5.59am when a group of motorcyclists took cover under the southbound flyover of the highway.
Lee also suggested the government build road barriers that separate the main traffic flow from the shelters built for motorcyclists.
"It is important to provide sufficient lighting and seating areas for motorcyclists to rest, as well as vehicle entry and exit signboards.
"If it is done correctly, it can save more lives in the future," he said.
