LAHAD DATU - A newborn boy was found on top of a chicken coop in the Kampung Jawa area, here on Monday.

The three kilogram baby was found without any clothing by a resident around 6.30am.

Lahad Datu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Rohan Shah Ahmad said the 51-year-old man found the boy while he was observing his chicken coop.

"A team from the Lahad Datu district police headquarters (IPD) was sent to the scene for further investigations.

"The boy was brought to the Lahad Datu Hospital for further treatments," he said in a statement on Monday.

He said the case was investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for irresponsible care towards the boy and the intent of baby dumping.

"If found guilty it could lead to a prison sentence of up to seven years or a fine or both.
