Man dies after being run over by bus while crossing highway

SEREMBAN - A Burmese man dies after being run over by an express bus while crossing a road at Kilometer 263.1 of the North-South Highway (Plus) heading north on Friday.

The accident at 9.20pm saw victim Nay Than Soe, 24, being dragged over 20 metres in the accident which also involved two cars, a Toyota Altis and a Perodua Alza.

Seremban District Police chief assistant commissioner Arifai Tarawe said that preliminary investigations found that the accident occurred when the Toyota Altis was moving in the right lane of the highway from Rembau towards Setia Alam.

"However, upon arriving at the scene, the victim tried to cross from the left shoulder of the road towards the middle divider of the highway in front of the Toyota Altis.

"The driver – a 42-year-old man – tried to brake but failed and hit the victim.

“The impact threw him into the middle lane of the highway.," he said in a statement on Saturday.

Arifai said a Perodua Alza driven by a 46-year-old man who was in the middle lane tried to change course to the left lane to avoid hitting the victim but an express bus rammed into his vehicle.

He added that the impact of the crash had caused the bus carrying 44 passengers to lose control and dragged the victims for about 20 metres.

"As a result, the victim suffered severe head and body injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

"All the other drivers and passengers did not suffer any injuries," he said.

In the meantime, he said, the public who have information about the accident or know the victim or next of kin can contact the investigating officer of the case Inspector Muhamad Alif Ab Jalil on 018-2029479/06-6033222 or can go to any nearby police station to assist the investigation.

He said that the case was investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and further investigation was still in progress.
