SHAH ALAM - Mental health is often a major topic discussed by various parties in Malaysia by both government agencies and organisations in order to raise awareness on its care and treatment.

Statistics have shown an increase in cases involving mental health which has raised concerns as often this is tied to the quality of life and productivity.

Data showed individuals receiving support through the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MPHSS) Hotline that was an initiative under the Health Ministry National Mental Health Excellence Centre increased by fivefold in 2021.

212,319 calls were received in 2020 and the previous year recorded 44,061 calls

Mental health is not contagious, but the lack of awareness to treat it can lead to the loss of life.

In 2021 there were 1,142 cases of suicidal behavior reported compared to 631 in 2020 which saw a significant increase.

Malaysians must understand the importance of their own mental health and immediately seek treatment.

The media recently reported a man who overreacted by throwing food packages and hot drinks at a restaurant after he was addressed as an uncle but instead wanted to be called 'brother' or 'baby'.

His actions caused a four-year-old child to be splashed with a hot drink.
