Offensive jokes by controversial stand-up comedian ignite fury among Malaysians
VEISHNAWI NEHRUKUALA LUMPUR - Malaysians are expressing their anger and disappointment towards controversial stand-up performer Jocelyn Chia for her insulting remarks and harsh jokes about Malaysia's development and Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.
Roslan Ramli, 52, told Sinar Daily that the comedian who used to be a Singapore citizen should refrain from making such comments as it can negatively impact the good relationship between the two countries.
"Our country's security and sovereignty should not be a subject of comedy or jokes, and I am furious about what Chia said in the video.
"I hope this issue does not become sensationalised or go viral as it can affect the harmony and sovereignty of our country," he said.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Faizhal Mohammed Fauzi, 30, expressed his opinion that the content was not suitable for a stand-up comedy performance or any form of comedy.
"The issue is highly sensitive, and it should also take into consideration the feelings of the MH370 victims. It has been brought up that Chia might lack empathy or any feelings towards the victims of MH370.
"Comedians should demonstrate more intelligence by selecting topics that do not insult or negatively condemn society.
"The chosen topics should be thoughtful, and it is unhealthy for Chia to simply insult our country," he said.
Chia opened her routine by sharing the history of Singapore with the audience.
"After gaining independence from the British, we were a struggling little nation and in order to survive, we formed a union with a larger and more powerful country, Malaysia," she said.
Upon learning that one of the audience members was from Malaysia, she responded with offensive language, saying, "F--k you a--holes."
