SENTUL - A one-year-old girl was reportedly assaulted by her mother's boyfriend at a residence in Desa Rejang People's Housing Projects (PPR) on Wednesday, resulting in severe injuries.

Wangsa Maju deputy district police chief Deputy Supritendant Saralathan Duraisamy, in a statement, said that the police were alerted to the incident at 5.05pm on the same day.

The toddler sustained injuries on her back, swollen lips, and bruises on both eyes.

"Preliminary investigations indicate that the perpetrator, identified as the mother's boyfriend and a local man, physically abused the child before fleeing the scene before the arrival of the authorities," he said.

The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Further investigation by the police revealed that the assault occurred because the child was deemed too loud.

The mother attempted to intervene and prevent the abuse, but her efforts proved unsuccessful.

The case is being investigated under Section 31 (1) of the Child Act and police urge the public to come forward with any information regarding the incident by contacting the Wangsa Maju district police headquarters at 03-92899222, the Kuala Lumpur Police Hotline at 03-21159999, or the nearest police station. - AWANI
