Dr Mahathir disagrees with calls to bring Sanusi to court
MOHAMAD AMREEL IMAN ABD MALEKSHAH ALAM - Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad considers the view of the Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor should not be labelled as a crime and disagrees if the latter is being dragged to the court of justice.
It followed the statement that Sanusi made on Kedah and Penang not having borders and Penang still falls under Kedah.
"I don't want to be involved in this controversy. However, suggesting that the Kedah MB, Sanusi, had committed a crime for giving his view about the island's history is excessive.
"From a historic standpoint, the Kedah Sultan at the time agreed to give up Penang with the payment of 6,000 Spanish dollars a year.
“It was then added with the strip of the mainland opposite (Seberang Perai) which was worth 4,000 Spanish dollars a year.
"I will not say anything about what happened to these two states except to admit that I persuaded Lim Guan Eng when he was the Finance Minister to give more than RM10,000 to Kedah yearly," he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
Dr Mahathir added the surrender of it to the British was tied to an agreement to defend Kedah from external threats.
However, he said it was common knowledge that the British violated the agreement.
