Penang to dissolve state assembly in last 10 days of June - CM
GEORGETOWN - Penang will dissolve its State Legislative Assembly within the last 10 days of June.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said, however, the state government has yet to fix a specific date to be announced in the near future.
"Maybe the state assembly will be dissolved in the last 10 days, but there is no date yet. If the Presidential Council can decide on the date, we will follow it.
"If there is no decision, then Penang will stick with our decision to dissolve the state assembly at the end of June," he told reporters after attending the opening ceremony of the Interactive Edutainment Programme at Gleneagles Hospital, here, today.
Chow, who is Penang Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said he hopes to announce the date of dissolution after the last Penang Government Meeting.
"We will determine the date during the last meeting.
"We have two to three more meetings," he said.
When asked if Penang would let the state assembly end its term automatically in July, Chow said the matter would not cause problems for the state government.
"Actually, we don't have a problem with it because we are nearing the end of the term, but as we promised at the beginning of the year, the state assembly will be dissolved by the end of June," he said.
Previously, Chow announced that the Penang Government would dissolve the state assembly in the third or fourth week of June to make way for the state election.
He said Penang would stick to its original plan to dissolve the state assembly in the last week of this month.
The six states that would hold the state election were Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.
The Election Commission (EC) previously stated that it was best to hold the six state elections simultaneously, as suggested by several parties before.
Its chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh said the move was to facilitate the commission's affairs including the coordination of staff in ensuring the process of electing new members of the State Legislative Assembly in the six states can run smoothly.
