Man attempting to flee after committing rape arrested at KLIA

KUALA LUMPUR - A man who attempted to flee to his home country after committing a rape here was detained by police at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Friday.

The Federal Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) said the rape incident occurred on May 31 at the victim's residence in Kuala Lumpur.

According to the department, the suspect, in his 20s, visited the victim's home under the pretext of conducting maintenance work.

However, he proceeded to rape her before fleeing the scene.

"The 24-year-old victim who managed to record the suspect's face with her phone immediately called her aunt to inform her of the incident before they lodged a police report on the same day.

"Based on the information obtained, the department's operation team managed to locate the suspect who was planning to escape by returning to his home country by plane," the department said in a statement today.

The suspect, hailing from a South Asian country, was apprehended at the departure gate of KLIA on Friday.

The suspect was then taken to Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters for further investigation.

"The suspect was remanded for seven days and the case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape," he said.
