Dr Mahathir says ready to work with Muhyiddin for the sake of Malays

KUALA LUMPUR - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has expressed his willingness to collaborate with Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, provided they share the same objectives.

The latest statement indicates a potential reconciliation between the two former prime ministers after a three-year feud.

Dr Mahathir emphasised the need to prioritise the welfare of the Malays and reject individuals involved in corruption or criminal misconduct as primary goals, MalaysiaNow reports.

He pointed out that the Malays were currently split according to political party, which made them weak and unable to rectify the situation.

"We want to work together, but the end goals must be set out," he said in Putrajaya.

"We have split into many parties, and we have lost power. When we lose power, we cannot correct the circumstances which are detrimental to the Malays.

"This is why we need to unite," he added.

Under Muhyiddin's leadership, Bersatu was established in 2016 after he and several Umno leaders were expelled from the party for openly criticising the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue.

Dr Mahathir assumed the role of chairman in Bersatu before the party joined the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, which eventually ousted the BN in the 14th general election (GE14) in 2018.

However, two years later, Dr Mahathir left Bersatu following a change in government known as the 'Sheraton Move,' which saw the collapse of the PH government and eventually replaced by PN led by Muhyiddin. - AWANI
