SHAH ALAM - Agora Society Malaysia through the Corruption Free Generation will organise the second series of public lectures titled 'Corruption as a Political Problem' at Tun Mohamed Suffian Auditorium, Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya (UM) this Saturday.

The programme with the cooperation of the UM Student Union (UMSU), Rasuah Busters, Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia (GBM) is divided into two topics.

The programme is scheduled from 2 to 5pm.

Programme coordinator Chan Yit Fei said, the programme will feature three guests namely University of Nottingham Malaysia Honorary Associate Researcher Dr Bridget Welsh, Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung and Senior Manager Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) Aira Zahari.

He said the main purpose of this programme is to give awareness and encouragement to the community to participate in curbing corruption.

"It is important for the public to be aware and understand the nature of corruption because knowledge is the first step in fighting and preventing it.

"When individuals have a clear understanding they are willing to recognise and stop corrupt practices.

"This awareness also empowers them to be more vigilant and demand accountability from public officials, which can reduce corruption in society," he said.

He further said that the understanding of corruption is important because everyone has the right to know the true cost of corruption and its adverse effects on society and individuals.

The latest research conducted by EMIR Research estimates that Malaysia has lost at least RM3 trillion over the past 26 years due to corruption.
