Allocate unused spectrum to parties keen on developing telecommunications in S'wak - Julaihi
KUCHING - Sarawak's Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications has requested the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to allocate unused spectrum to parties interested in developing telecommunications infrastructure in the state.
State Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications, Datuk Julaihi Narawi said this move will enable efforts to expand internet coverage in Sarawak to be carried out more effectively and efficiently.
"I understand that the spectrum allocated to existing license holders is not fully used in the development of connectivity, especially in rural areas,” he said.
Winding up the debate for the ministry at the state assembly sitting here today, Julaihi also proposed that the MCMC obtain confirmation and approval from the state government before allocating spectrum to any party that wants to operate, in line with the amendments to the Sarawak Land Code.
"Amendments to Sections 2, 36 and 213 under the Sarawak Land Code last year have given the Sarawak government the authority to regulate airspace including spectrum management and use,” he said.
He said the spectrum consisting of radio frequency bands is an important asset like other natural resources and currently, its management is regulated by MCMC. - BERNAMA
