KJ offered Bersatu Supreme Council member - Muhyiddin
KUALA LUMPUR – Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin will be offered the position of Bersatu Supreme Council member should he decide to join the party.
Its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the decision to offer the former Rembau member of parliament (MP) has already been discussed with other Bersatu leaders recently.
"We have already discussed this matter with others in the party. We have two vancancies now. The seat is available for Khairy if he wants it.
"We’re not baiting him. We are leaving it to Khairy to decide, we are not pushing him to decide. He knows when it is the right time," he said.
Khairy was among several UMNO members who were expelled for breaching party disciplinary rules during the 15th general election (GE15).
Muhyiddin said this in a press conference after presenting MASA Policy Development Programme (MPDP 2.0) Research Grant awards.
He also hoped that Khairy would make a decision soon, as the state election would take place in June.
"The state assembly will dissolve in June, so there is not much time right now, so he needs to think carefully. This is the right time; everyone expects him to join Perikatan Nasional (PN).
"He asked to meet me a long time ago after he was sacked from Umno. So we met to discuss openly where I was headed to.
"Khairy is a young political figure of high calibre. In fact, he didn't ask to join the party, but I had offered it to him," he added.
The Pagoh MP said if Khairy joins Bersatu, he can help strengthen the party.
"Everyone already knows what happened to Umno, how the party was destroyed, and how it is now harbouring DAP.
"This might destroy the hopes of the majority of Umno members. For Bersatu, we know the direction we are heading in; we fight for the people, defend all our rights, and prove that Bersatu and the Pas coalition are supported by the Malays. GE15 was the proof," he said.
Meanwhile, in preparation for the upcoming state polls,he said PN has almost finalised the seat allocation negotiation among its component parties.
The PN chairman said the PN Supreme Council meeting scheduled to take place on May 23 will discuss the matter.
"I have instructed the negotiating team of each party to complete it (seat allocation process). They consisted of Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu; Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, and Gerakan president Datuk Dr Dominic Lau.
"There are only one or two seats left for negotiation. We will know who gets it after the negotiation is finished. Then we will ask for a list of potential candidates suitable to be fielded for seats that will be contested," he explained.
