KOTA KINABALU - A total of 32.3 tonnes of garbage has been collected and disposed of through the KK Cleanup Day programme on Pula Gaya.

The programme organised by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) was carried out for three days by residents on the island.

DBKK director-general Junainah Abbie said the programme aimed at raising public awareness on Kota Kinabalu's cleanliness among the community around the area, especially at Pulau Gaya.

"The programme this time focuses on areas around Kampung Lok Urai and Kampung Kasuapan, Pulau Gaya where residents from several main residential blocks had been asked to do cleaning activities in their respective areas before and during the programme.

"Over the course of three days, residents have successfully disposed of 32.3 tonnes of garbage which were thrown into the prepared boats at six jetties," she said in a statement today.

Junainah also called on the people of the city to always be responsible in disposing the waste they had produced themselves in the right way and channel.

"Cleanliness is a basic thing and environmental cleanliness can prevent many health problems," she said.
