PN surprised by Azam’s reappointment as MACC chief, says Mas Ermieyati

SHAH ALAM - The reason given by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to reappoint Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki is not reasonable, says Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

Anwar, who is also the Tambun MP, earlier said that Azam was appointed to the role during Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's administration, and has carried out his duties and taken action without favouring any group or party.

"As far as I can see,his performance in carrying out his duties is satisfactory. He (Azam) has taken action without favouring any group or party," Anwar added.

Mas Ermiyati who is Perikatan Nasional (PN)'s Masjid Tanah MP, said that her coalition party was surprised by this action.

"Previously, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) always questioned Azam's credibility. Even Rafizi Ramli raised many questions about Azam's credibility. But look at it today, PH has a change of mind, and this is what makes the people confused about what is happening.

"In fact, the reasons given by the Prime Minister are not acceptable. So, I hope that the prime minister could give a reasonable answer, not for himself but for the rakyat," she told a press conference after the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM) on Integrity, Governance, and Anti-Corruption event held at the Karangkraf Complex here on Tuesday.

On May 10, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali announced that Azam has been reappointed MACC chief commissioner for another year, effective May 12.

Azam was first appointed to the role on March 9, 2020, replacing Latheefa Koya. Before that, he was MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) for four years starting in 2016. He was also director of intelligence and director of the investigation division.

Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun was also reappointed to his position for one year, starting in March.
