KUALA LUMPUR - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given his assurance to leaders in Sabah and Sarawak that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA1963) issue will be solved as soon as possible.

Anwar explained that the issue had started decades ago and he refused to drag it any longer.

"I hereby gives full mandate to the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof to complete the content of the signed agreement and implement it.

"There are those who ridicule our effort because they claim the government wants to guarantee support from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).

"I answer that we do have that intention but more importantly it is because it falls under the current leaders' responsibility to fulfill the oath of allegiance and the promise made by our father of independence," he said at the Unity Government National Convention at World Trade Centre (WTC) yesterday.

In his speech, Anwar had also mentioned efforts to solve the issue of clean water supply in Sabah and Sarawak.

He said the government will do their best to solve the issue this year even if it requires allocating billions of Ringgit.

"We are not doing so because the election is around the corner, but because it is an important matter for the poeple. After achieving independence for 60 years, they should have to be humiliated by having difficulty in getting clean water supply.

"This is what the Unity Government means. We fulfill our promises. When? The time is now," he explained.
