Literacy programmes, IT training the way forward for economic growth, says Nancy

KUALA LUMPUR - Literacy programmes and IT training are key economic policies aimed at promoting business opportunities and improving livelihoods for Malaysians.

Speaking at the Unity Government National Convention held at the World Trade Centre (WTC) in Kuala Lumpur, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said empowering local communities, especially the youths through knowledge and leadership training was crucial to prepare them for employment and entrepreneurial skills.

"We should plan to give youths proper training in IT and to give them proper training," she said this during her speech title “Bicara Rakyat - Empowering the People’s Economy on the Unity Government National Convention at World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur, today.

Nancy said the importance of offering financial and digital literacy programmes and IT training are crucial components as seen during Covid pandemic on the use of IT.

"Additionally, we need to identify the factors that hinder business opportunities and livelihoods in local communities," she added.

She further emphasised the importance of prioritising food security concerns and to raise awareness to safeguard the existing supply chain.

"Understanding of local economic issues are crucial to increase productivity of local enterprises," she added.

Nancy also highlighted the significance of adopting a village approach to enhance the local economy.

"The purpose of such programmes are to uplift the standard of living in the village and foster economic improvement," she added.

Among the initiatives undertaken by the government is to improve internet infrastructure in rural regions, she said adding that better internet access will enable rural communities to broaden their agricultural market and reach a global audience.
