SHAH ALAM - Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi describes Parti Amanah Negara's (Amanah) as a party that backstabs its friends.

This was following Amanah’s statement urging Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, to reject the appeal for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s royal pardon.

He said Amanah Communications director Khalid Abdul Samad's action caused Amanah to only be an acquaintance rather than an ally in their struggles.

"That’s why it’s hard to form an alliance with Amanah. We can only become friends. Friends that won’t guarantee the unity government’s position. Friends that would backstab each other," he said on Facebook on Sunday.

Sinar on Friday reported Amanah urging the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to reject Najib’s royal pardon.

Khalid viewed the pardon as sending a bad message to the people, the justice system, and the world regarding the nation’s stand on corruption and misuse of power.

Puad described that Amanah had insulted the discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, besides questioning His Majesty’s wisdom.

"Amanah’s issue is to push Yang di-Pertuan Agong to reject Najib's pardon. Umno is merely supporting it," he said.

He added Khalid’s statement is considered the party’s official position, and it was not denied by its president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

"Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub wanted Najib’s supporters to be open-minded to the Pardons Board’s decision. Umno does not have any issues and will comply with the legislative process.

"Umno did not make any noise when the Pardons Board didn’t discuss Najib’s case two days ago," he said.
