SHAH ALAM - The National Conciliation of Parents and Teachers Association (PIBGN) supports the proposal by the Health Ministry to make face masks mandatory in schools.

Its president, Associate Professor Datuk Dr Mohamad Ali Hasan said this is a measure to curb the surge in Covid-19 cases following the spread of the XBB.1.16 variant known as Arcturus.

"Initially, we want to take care of not only our health but of those around us.

"So, of course, school needs to be prioritised. With the emergence of the new Omicron subvariant, this measure is very much needed, in addition to controlling various other diseases and dangerous viruses.

"We also see that the health needs in hospitals are increasing and getting more critical. "Due to these two aspects, everyone needs to take precautions to ensure that the situation can be controlled.

"We believe that recovery is more expensive than fighting. So, face masks are strongly encouraged, and we agree with the Health Ministry’s recommendation," he told Sinar Harian on Thursday.
