Op Selamat 20 records 1,964 accidents on first day

KUALA LUMPUR - A total of 1,964 accidents throughout the country were recorded on the first day (Thursday) of Op Selamat 20 for this Hari Raya season.

The Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), in a statement, said these accidents involved a total of 2,486 vehicles throughout the country.

"Cars recorded the highest (1,704 or 68.54 per cent), motorcycles (279), four-wheel drive vehicles (206) multipurpose vehicles (150), lorries (91), vans (44), busses (10) and taxis (two)," it said in a Facebook post on Friday.

Police Inspector-General Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani launched Op Selamat 20 in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, which will go from April 20 to 27.

Acryl announced the eight-day operations would be implemented by JSPT under the theme Safe Home, Safe Arrival at Destination’.

The focus of the operations was to ensure smooth traffic flow, minimise accidents on the road, guarantee property and premises safety, and lower crime rates during the festive season.

Acryl said the police, through the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK), will focus on reducing property theft crimes such as break-ins.
