MetMsia releases thunderstorm warnings for most states in M'sia

SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has released thunderstorm warnings for 12 states until 6pm on Friday.

In a statement released at 3.36pm, the department informed that thunderstorms were expected to occur in Perlis, Kedah (Langkawi, Kulim and Bandar Baharu) and Penang (Seberang Perai Utara, Seberang Perai Tengah and Seberang Perai Selatan).

It added that coastal areas in Perak were also expected to be hit by thunderstorms, such as Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Perak Tengah, Kampar, Hilir Perak, Batang Padang and Muallim while Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Hulu Langat were also expected to be affected.

Apart from that, east coast states such as Kelantan (Jeli and Gua Musang), Terengganu (Hulu Terengganu and Dungun) and Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, and Rompin) were also expected to be hit by thunderstorms.

Moreover, Negeri Sembilan (Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Jempol, and Tampin), Johor (Mersing), Limbang in Sarawak and Sabah including rural areas such as (Beaufort), Pantai Barat Papar, Putatan, Penampang, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, and Kota Belud) as well as Tawau, could also expect thunderstorms.

MetMalaysia added the warnings were released as there were warnings of thunderstorms with high intensity rain over 20 millimetres per hour to take place over an hour.

"These are short term thunderstorm warnings, which occur for no more than six hours for a single outbreak," it said.
