Sudan's unrest: Two Malaysians evacuated to safety

PUTRAJAYA - Two Malaysians were successfully evacuated into a safe location in Khartoum, Sudan.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said in the operation Malaysia also helped two Canadian citizens, two United Kingdom citizens and one American citizen to safety.

“I want to inform that even though this was a high-risk operation it was done to guarantee the safety of Malaysians who needed help,” he said through a statement on Friday.

He said the actions were taken after making a thorough assessment with a mandate from the Wisma Putra Special Forces.

This followed the latest report of a clash between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) getting worse in several locations in Khartoum currently.

“The evacuation operations is in preparations for our Embassy to gather Malaysians to a safe location to evacuate them out of Khartoum later,” he said.

He said the situations in Sudan is getting more complex and constantly changing at all times with both sides continuing the conflict.

“The ceasefire that has been proposed several times by the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), the Islamic Cooperation Organisation (OIC) and the United States has not been followed.

The power struggle between the formerly allied military junta leaders, army chief Burhan and RSF army chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo known widely as Hemedti had caused a six-day clash with 350 casualties.
