PUTRAJAYA - The Education Ministry today announced April 19 as a special school holiday, this comes as school mid term holidays starts on April 20.

The announcement was made by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

This year, Hari Raya is expected to fall on either on April 21 or 22, however this is subjected to sightings of new moon after sunset on April 20.

Teaching Profession National Union (NUTP) previously requested that the Education Ministry grant a special school holiday for teachers on April 19.

Its President Aminuddin Awang said the special holiday is considered a necessity, taking into account the expectation that Syawal 1 may fall on April 21, a day earlier than originally expected.

"The special holiday given will provide room for teachers and Malaysians who are forced to cross states to come back for Eid.

"This will reduce traffic congestion and provide more comfort for all parties," Aminuddin said.
