Fluminense beat Flamengo to win Rio state championship

RIO DE JANEIRO - Fluminense secured their second consecutive Rio de Janeiro state title on Sunday with a 4-1 home win over Flamengo.

Former Real Madrid defender Marcelo opened the scoring with a 30th-minute strike and Argentine forward German Cano netted either side of halftime to make it 3-0.

Alexsander extended the lead just after the hour mark before Ayrton pulled a goal back in stoppage time.

The result handed Fluminense a 4-3 win on aggregate in the final after Flamengo prevailed 2-0 in the first leg.

Fluminense are second on the Rio state championship all-time winners' list with 33 titles, four fewer than leaders Flamengo. - XINHUA
