KUALA LUMPUR - In a bid to secure release from imprisonment, Umno president Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi also sought Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah's compassion to grant full pardon to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is currently serving a 12-year sentence in Kajang Prison.

Earlier today, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuk said in a statement that the Umno Supreme Council (MKT) had taken note of the party's grassroots members' sentiments on the Federal Court's recent ruling, which denied Najib's appeal to overturn his conviction for misappropriating SRC International funds.

"We do not intend to insist, but we request the King to consider the appeal from Umno.

"Today we (Umno) are happy to break the fast together, but our former Umno leader is in prison.

"We are very sympathetic; we pray for him to be given strength so that the Pardons Board gives this some consideration," said Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, during his speech at the 2023 Umno Iftar event at the World Trade Centre (WTC).

"I thank you very much because 100 per cent of Umno's supreme councils supported the application for this pardon.

"In fact, the division heads have also collected the signatures of members across the country.

"What is even more exciting is that there are more than 3,000 signatures from Umno Wanita across the country.
