Policeman arrested for smuggling firecrackers using PDRM vehicle
KOTA BHARU - Two men including a policeman have been arrested to assist in an investigation into the use of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) vehicle to smuggle fireworks.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun said the incident occurred at 7.45pm on Wednesday when members of the General Operations Force Eighth Battalion intelligence unit followed a Toyota Hilux belonging to PDRM.
He said said as soon as they arrived at the Wakaf Bata traffic light in Machang, here, they found that the policeman was with another man who was a 35-year old mechanic.
"PGA members followed the suspicious vehicle with the two suspects from Tanah Merah," he said in a statement, today.
Muhamad Zaki said further investigations found that there were RM25,000 worth of firecrackers at the back of the vehicle.
He added that police was in the midst of identifying whether the policeman was outside of his area on duty.
"Checks also found that the policeman was stationed at the Setiu district police headquarters while the mechanic had five previous criminal records related to narcotics.
"Both suspects were remanded for four days starting Wednesday and the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957," he said.
