SINGAPORE - No bail was granted by Singapore Court to a man who allegedly assaulted Malaysian actor Kamal Adli.

"On the basis of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) report, I am ordering no bail,” said District Judge Brenda Tan today.

The judge agreed to the prosecutor's application for no-bail and a four-week adjournment for an investigation officer to complete the investigation.

"This case is adjourned for four weeks to May 2,” said Tan.

The accused was earlier remanded three weeks at the IMH for psychiatric observation.

The 33-year-old man was charged at State Courts on March 14 for "his suspected involvement in a case of voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapon.”

If convicted, the offence of voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapon under Section 324 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term which may extend to seven years, a fine, caning, or any combination of such punishments.

Earlier, the accused who was present physically at the court objected to the no-bail offer by the prosecutor.

When asked by Tan regarding his objection, the accused said that IMH has reviewed him as having "good conduct and behaviour”.

"I don’t see there is a need for me to not be given a bail offer,” said the accused who was not represented by any counsel.

Before handing over the decision, Tan stood down the case for about three minutes to facilitate the court to read two paragraphs specifically the 18th and 21st in the IMH report to the accused.

Responding to it, the accused who wore a black T-shirt said that "not everything in paragraphs 18th and 21st is true, which I disagree.”

On March 12 at about 9.19pm, Singapore Police Force was alerted to a case at 1 Expo Drive where the suspect had allegedly assaulted the 36-year actor with a baton which was seized by the police as a case exhibit.

The injured Kamal had to undergo surgery at a hospital here.
