Selling firecrackers, fireworks online prohibited

PUTRAJAYA - Any form of online sale of firecrackers and fireworks are prohibited, even if it involves the type of products that are allowed.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this was part of the guideline decided by the ministry where only 46 types of “happy boom” firework and “pop-pops” were allowed to be sold.

"Online sales are not allowed, the ministry and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will constantly monitor to ensure sellers with valid permit sell permitted types of fireworks.

"Moreover, sales should be done in places or premises that are considered safe and the authorities will continue its enforcement in accordance with the Explosive Acts 1957," he said when met by reporters in Putrajaya, yesterday.

Saifuddin said the ministry will take appropriate actions if there were any complaints about any online sale.

“The police and the ministry as well as enforcement agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and local authorities will conduct monitoring, inspection and enforcement," he said.

Commenting further, Saifuddin said only 27 companies that complied with PDRM's guidelines and conditions received approval to import, store and sell firecrackers.

“The Customs Department will make sure only companies with valid permits can import fireworks and firecrackers.

"The local authorities will ensure only sellers with valid permits can sell these items," he said.

He also stressed that according to the Explosives Act 1957 and the Explosives Rules 1923, the ministry and the police were responsible to monitor the import and sale of firecrackers and fireworks.

"The public are advised to comply with the law by only buying from sellers with valid sales permit and make sure the materials passes the security aspects that was set," he said.
