Umno may face backlash from voters after changing CM, say experts

SHAH ALAM - The resignation of former Melaka chief minister and the appointment of a new chief may have a negative impact on Umno during state elections.

Socio political analyst Datuk M Periasamy said voters want political stability and are not keen in internal party problems.

"Now with the replacement, it seems that there is one thing that is wrong because it was previously said that (Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh) is not suitable as chief minister. Now he has been elected, it may cause a bigger faction," he told Sinar.

He said the replacement may give a perception that Umno's focus was on hanging on to power.

"Umno needs to solve its internal problems first. Listen to the grievances of the grassroots, take the view of all not only those on top.

On Friday, Sinar reported that Umno’s preparations to face the six state elections were not affected by the political turmoil in Melaka.

Umno’s supreme working council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the replacement was due to health problems faced by Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.

Meanwhile, political analyst, Dr Muhamad Nadzri Mohamed Noor says the change of leadership is not good for Umno.

He said it reinforces the notion that Umno is only for its President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"When there is an issue that invites negativity to the party, people who are 'tired' of the current political situation will act not to vote in the election.

"They might vote for another party. Not because they support the other side but they may no longer be interested in Umno," he added.

Rauf was sworn in as the new chief minister on March 31.
