KOTA KINABALU - The use of food dyes especially on grilled chicken wings that is popular in the state, is being monitored by the Food Safety and Quality Unit under the Sabah Health Department (JKNS).

Sabah Health director Datuk Dr Rose Nani Mudin said although there has been no complaints from the public so far, inspections were still being carried out continuously.

"There is a team to monitor the food quality and safety where they conduct tests on randomly taken samples including chicken meat to identify Solmonella bacteria and so on.

"So far, there has been no issue (food dye on chicken wings) and there are indeed inspections carried out from time to time by the Food Safety and Quality Division," she told reporters after conducting an inspection at the Lintasan Deasoka Bazaar, here, on Tuesday.

She said this when answering a question about the issue of excessive food coloring use, especially on grilled chicken wings sold at the bazaar.

She also said samples taken usually requires several days to be tested at the Health Laboratory.

"We often take and send food samples for laboratory testing and it usually takes five days to identify the sample," she said.

Previously, the issue of using food dyes to make food much more appealing had went viral on social media and raised concerns
