'I was welcomed by every head of state' says Dr M
PUTRAJAYA - Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he had never been welcomed by a low-ranking official of a country on an official visit during his tenure as the prime minister.
"When I was prime minister, I made many official visits, and there was not a single country that did not welcome me, and I was welcomed by the head of state," he said during a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here on Tuesday.
He said this commenting on Anwar's recent visit to Saudi Arabia.
"I don't know why Anwar was not welcomed. I don't understand why the Saudi King did not want to meet Anwar.
"When I went there, the only people who met Anwar were low-ranking officials," he added.
Dr Mahathir was referring to Anwar's failure to secure an audience with King Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud or Crown Prince Mohammed Salman Al-Saud during a three-day long official visit.
The opposition bloc demanded that Anwar answer questions over his official visit to Saudi.
Machang MP Wan Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal had said Anwar's official visit was considered a failure and a shame for the country as he did not meet the country's top leader.
