High hopes for karate to deliver gold medals in Cambodia Sea Games
KUALA LUMPUR - Karate, a sport that has always lived up to expectations by contributing gold medals in the Sea Games, is again on the radar of the Malaysian contingent since the 2023 Cambodia Sea Games is just around the corner.
Cambodia Sea Games Chef-de-Mission for the Malaysian contingent Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali has placed high hopes on karate to deliver the goods, especially so since the federation now has a new chief coach from Egypt, Tamer Abdelraouf Mohamed Mourssy, at the helm.
"I am confident that the karate squad will contribute even more gold medals than what the sport had won at the Vietnam SEA Games last year,” he told reporters after visiting the team’s preparations for the Sea Games, here today.
In Vietnam, the karate squad ended their campaign with four gold and six bronze medals.
Meanwhile, speaking of the Sea Games Torch Run, Mohd Nasir said the run has been scheduled to be held in the capital on April 11, and participated by current and former athletes.
The Torch Run had started in Cambodia last Tuesday and the run was held around the historic Angkor Wat before heading to participating countries, namely - Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos.
The Torch will return to Cambodia on April 27.- BERNAMA
