PUTATAN - A total of 160 students were arrested for involvement in various crimes including rape in Sabah last year.

Sabah police commissioner Datuk Idris Abdullah said these statistics were recorded from January to December last year.

"There were 140 male students and 20 female students arrested. The most active crime involving students was rioting, which came under under Section 147/148 of the Penal Code where 55 students were arrested.

"This was followed by assault, with 21 students, where 18 of them were male and three were female, who had been arrested under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

"Additionally, 20 male students were involved in rape offence and 19 students had committed theft," he said when speaking at the First Day of School Programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Petagas here today.

He said it was very worrying that there was a high number of students involved in crimes.

"Out of the 160 students, only nine students were released unconditionally after investigation had completed.

"The rest were released on police bail and are likely to be charged in court while two students were charged in court for rioting and theft," he said.
