KOTA BHARU - The Kelantan government has formulated a strategy to check the illegal use of water resources for commercial agriculture on 20,000 hectares in Lojing, Gua Musang.

State Works, Infrastructure, Transport and Utilities Committee chairman Datuk Azami Mohd Nor said the strategy called for all the farmers to be required to get the water resources temporary abstraction licence that was approved on Oct 19 last year.

He added that the problem of uncontrolled water intake that is currently occurring can only be controlled through the issuance of permits and enforcement by government agencies.

"JSANK was given a mandate to carry out the enforcement of the licensing for all water resource users, especially in the Lojing Highlands.

"Checks found that the hundreds of vegetables farmers have used water sources for commercial agriculture without a valid licence and they have never been charged any fees for the water use,” he said in reply to Mohd Syabuddin Hashim (BN-Galas) at the Kelantan State Assembly sitting today.

Azami said to date, JSANK has approved four temporary licences and implemented integrated enforcement to curb the problem.

"The department also held engagement sessions with landowners who are also government agencies to facilitate the licensing process in phases.

"Through licensing and enforcement, water resource management can be implemented sustainably and reduce the impact on the environment," he said - BERNAMA
