BUTTERWORTH - DAP condemns the actions of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who is still playing on racial sentiments by scaring the Malay community in the country.

Dr. Mahathir's statement, according to DAP Secretary-General Anthony Loke, severely grieved his party and did not reflect his stature as a statesman, a two-time former premier, or his prior cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH). The former premier should have unified the people but his statement issued earlier would break the unity among the various races in the country.

"So we hope that he can play his role more constructively rather than issuing statements that are seen as not only unhelpful but triggering racial sentiments.

"If he loves this country, he should use his influence to help the country, to attract more investment for our country and to attract a lot of interest in developing our country.

"Don't play on fabricated racial sentiments, there is no fact or situation where Malays lose power. The Prime Minister is a Malay, most of the ministers are Malays, all institutions are still held by Malays and the Chief Secretary is also a Malay. So where is the portrayal that the Malays have lost power?" he said at a press conference on Sunday.

Earlier, Anthony Loke attended the Penang DAP Annual Convention 2023 held at the Butterworth Arena.

Also present were DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng and Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow.

Commenting further, Anthony said that Dr Mahathir's deliberate act of intimidation against the Malays was his old game.

He stressed that with the formation of this Unity government, he should have a better understanding of the political game thrown by the opposition to the government.

But now, he added, Dr Mahathir is still playing on old sentiments to divide unity.

Previously, the media reported that Dr Mahathir's statement warned that the Malays would lose power completely in this country after the next two general elections looking at the current political situation.
