Ramadhan weather expected to be drier, but be prepared for wet evenings

SHAH ALAM - The weather during Ramadhan is expected to be much drier this year.

However, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Science and Environmental Science Faculty Meteorological Researcher Dr Chung Jung Xiang said the weather forecast would still see frequent rain in the evenings.

“Malaysia would normally enter the monsoon transition season at the end of March.

“The weather conditions during this season would usually be drier than the monsoon season although evening rainfall would often occur,” he told Sinar Ahad on Saturday.

Chung advised the public who wanted to enjoy the Ramadhan bazar fare, to be prepared with umbrellas before hand.

The public should consistently observe forecasts released by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

“I urge the public to prepare umbrellas while heading to the Ramadhan bazar and they must remain aware of MetMalaysia forecasts,” he said.

Climatologist Dr Fredolin Tajudin Tangang viewed the high possibility of thunderstorms in the evenings that could disrupt business activities during the fasting month.

“The Ramadhan month is starting on the last week of March and there may be a possibility it will enter the monsoon transition season.

“Usually it would occur in April and May with rainfalls throughout the west coast of the Peninsular caused by the frequent thunderstorms in the evening towards the night.

“The heavy rain could cause flash floods especially in city areas such as Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

He added the MetMalaysia forecasts play an important role and was suited for the public to refer to with its high accuracy.

“I urge the public to pay attention towards MetMalaysia forecasts.

“The forecasts released every 24 hours have a high accuracy and should be made a guideline to help vendors and Ramadhan bazar visitors,” he stated.
