Umno election: 189 divisions to determine the party's leadership
PONTIAN - About 100,000 members from 189 Umno divisions nationwide will fulfill their responsibility to elect the party's leadership at the divisional and central levels tomorrow.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said on average, there are 500 to 700 members in each division.
"Out of the 191 Umno divisions, two divisions will not be holding their divisional assembly this year namely Tanah Merah (Kelantan) and Kota Kinabalu (Sabah).
"Tanah Merah Umno has been suspended since June 16, 2020, while Kota Kinabalu Umno has issues with the Umno branch ," he said when met after visiting an otak-otak factory in Pontian Besar, here, today.
Ahmad Maslan who is also the Deputy Finance Minister, hoped that the Umno Election Committee can ensure the election process runs smoothly.
"The election process will start at 8am so hopefully around 10pm we can know who has won at the division and central level.
"Hopefully there will be no issues related to violation of rules tomorrow. Everything must follow the rules as per the election's standard operating procedure," he said.
The Pontian Member of Parliament said that each party representatives needs to choose the best leader capable in leading Umno in the next three to five years.
"We don't want leaders who merely want the position but can't do any of the tasks given.
"The list of those competing at the central and division level has been announced so choose the best leader.
"This party election is expected to produce great leaders who can restore Umno's strength at the division and central levels," he said.
The party's election will end on March 18 and the Umno division delegates meeting and elections along with election for Umno Supreme Council (MKT) member will also be held simultaneously nationwide on the same day.
