Two hotel restaurants closed due to filthy conditions

MELAKA - The Melaka State Health authorities have ordered two out of the 44 hotel restaurants in Melaka to temporarily close ahead of Ramadan after its level of cleanliness was found to be unsatisfactory and there was rat infestation.

Its director Dr Rusdi Abd Rahman said based on the inspections carried out for two days from Wednesday to Thursday, the two premises were told to temporarily close under Section 11 of Food Act 1983 for cleaning works to be carried out.

He said the order was issued in collaboration with the Food Safety and Quality Division and the Inspection and Legislation Unit, which had carried out food safety and cleanliness inspection of the premises under the Food Act 1983, enforcement of the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 and the hotel's environment cleanliness inspection under Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975.

"A total of 46 compound fines totalling RM18,750 were issued.

"Inspection was also carried out at eight hotels identified as breeding place for larvae," he said in a statement, here, today.

He said a total of 17 fines worth of RM4,250 were issued for offence of not putting up 'No Smoking' signs under the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004.

He said if consumers have any concerns regarding food safety and cleanliness issues of food premises, they can contact the nearest district health office or state health department or they can make a complaint via http://moh.spab.gov.my.

"The state health authorities are always concerned about the things that can threaten the consumers' safety and health," he said.
