ALOR SETAR - The Kedah State Assembly sitting was told today that 34 out of 50 houses damaged by the floods and water surge incident in Kampung Iboi near Baling have been repaired.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the repair work on the remaining 16 houses is expected to be completed on March 16.

"The construction of 12 new homes under phase one of the project has reached 43 per cent as of Jan 30. The second phase, which will involve 17 units in Bukit Batu Kawi, Mukim Kupang, is still in the land acquisition process.

"The project involves an allocation totalling RM3 million from the state and federal governments,” he said in response to a question from Datuk Zamri Yusuf (PH-Suka Menanti), who wanted to know about the total number of houses to be repaired and replaced for flood victims in Yan and Kampung Iboi.

Muhammad Sanusi added that repair work on 55 houses of flood victims in Yan had been completed, and all the houses are now occupied by the residents involved.

Meanwhile, state Works, Water Supply and Water Resources, Irrigation and Drainage and Energy Committee chairman Mohamad Yusoff Zakaria said that RM15 million had been approved for phase one of the flood mitigation project in Baling.

"The project will be implemented in Sungai Kupang,” he said in reply to a question from Abd Nasir Idris (PAS-Bayu), who wanted to know about the flood mitigation project in the Baling district.

Mohamad Yusoff said the project is in the final design development phase, and the construction is expected to start early next year. - BERNAMA
