Muhyiddin released on RM2 mil bail

Judges Azura Alwi and Suzana Hussain set the amount after allowing the prosecution's application against the Bersatu president who is facing six charges of corruption cases amounting to RM232.5 million and money laundering amounting to RM195 million.
During the proceedings, the Solicitor General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh said the prosecution team suggested that the accused be granted bail of RM2 million with two local sureties and non-family members.
Meanwhile, lawyer Datuk K Kumaraendran who represents the Pagoh MP said the defence did not object to the proposed bail amount and conditions.
In addition to Kumaraendran, the defence had also lined up with lawyers Datuk Rosli Dahlan and Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan.
The court then set May 26 for the case mention.
Earlier, today, Muhyiddin was charged as an official of a public body, namely the Prime Minister of Malaysia and President of Bersatu, to have used his position to bribe money amounting to RM232.5 million from an individual, Azman Yusoff, 51, and three companies, Bukhary Equity Sdn Bhd, Nepturis Sdn. Bhd and Mamfor Sdn Bhd between 1 March 2020 and 20 August 2021.
For the other two charges, Muhyiddin, as the party's President, is alleged to have received proceeds from illegal activities, namely money amounting to RM195 million from Bukhary Equity, which was deposited into Bersatu's CIMB Bank account on 25 February 2021 and 8 July 2022.
Muhyiddin, 75, served as prime minister from March 2020 to August 2021.
If found guilty, he would become Malaysia’s second former prime minister tarnished with a corruption-link charges. Former leader Datuk Seri Najib Razak was sent to prison for 12 years in 2022 over the 1MDB financial scandal which brought down his government four years earlier.
Muhyiddin could face up to 20 years and five years in prison, respectively, if prosecuted and convicted of abuse of power and money laundering.
