SCAM ISSUE: Communications Ministry to call in Telegram for discussion
SHAH ALAM - Communication and Digital Ministry will invite Telegram application provider soon to discuss issues related to user security.
Its minister, Fahmi Fadzil said the government will not compromise on the issue even though the application is used by government agencies, including the National Security Council, to disseminate information to the people.
"Telegram which is a channel to convey information to the public, is now seen as problematic. All kinds of information are shared there. Scam activities are also rampant in Telegram.
"So this is a serious matter that needs to be looked in to. We will call up Telegram to discuss to help the authorities take appropriate action.
"This action will disallow scam activities, pronography, and exteremism, curbing them from happening," he said at a town hall session broadcast live on all Sinar digital platforms tonight.
The Lembah Pantai member of parliament also hopes that Telegram will cooperate just like other service providers have done before.
"When the former prime minister has become a victim of a scam via Telegram, what more for a citizen? So this is an issue that needs serious attention and must be dealt with immediately. I will work on it.
"I believe the ministry officials have already called them, and I am waiting for further feedback. When it comes to scams like this, it is very worrying (because) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri was also impersonated," he said.
