KUALA LUMPUR - The government will examine the proposal to place the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) under the purview of Parliament.

Currently MACC is placed under the Prime Minister's department.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said, appropriate action will be taken once the research on the recommendation is completed.

"For your information, the government is very open to views and recommendations voiced from various parties including members of Parliament to improve effectiveness of MACC.

"This matter will be examined by the relevant parties for appropriate action," she said in a written reply at the Dewan Rakyat here on Thursday.

She said this in response to a question from Gobind Singh Deo (PH-Damansara) who asked the Prime Minister to state whether the government intends to bring MACC under the jurisdiction of Parliament and for it to no longer be placed under the Prime Minister's Department.

Several parties have previously suggested that MACC be placed under Parliament to ensure that the agency's check and balance process be more independent and transparent.

This follows various allegations including the selective prosecution of certain political party leaders.
