Kota Tinggi flooded
KOTA TINGGI - Kota Tinggi has been flooded due to the constant downpour in the district since Tuesday.
The roads headed into the town near a shopping mall was inaccessible as the waters have reached depths of 0.5 to 1.2 metres.
Restaurant worker Hafiz Abu Samad, 34, said the floods were less severe than what happened in 2006 and 2007.
"The restaurant I'm working in closed today due to the floods.
"When floods occur, Kota Tinggi residents will surely remember the severe floods that hit 16 years ago," he said.
Shop helper Norliyah Yusof, 51, said it was not as severe as the flood in 2007, but water levels rising due to the rain and high tides were still concerning.
"The rain has been pouring since the morning and I'm worried I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight. However, residents are much more cautious after the floods 16 years ago.
"Hopefully the water subsides quickly and the Kota Tinggi roads can be used," she said.
Farm worker Roslan Dahlan, 48, said several housing areas around the town were affected by the floods.
"Residents are worried about the Johor River spilling over and flooding the city centre even more if the rain continues.
"I hope the Semanggar Dam doesn't release any water as the town would be completely underwater if it does.
"The severe floods in 2006, 2007 still haunts residents and we hope the floods subside soon," he said.
As of noon, on Wednesday Kota Tinggi recorded 1,156 flood victims from 259 families placed in 13 temporary evacuation centres.
