Johor floods worsening
JOHOR BAHRU - Floods here continue to worsen with 5,878 people from 1,575 families transferred to 54 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) as of noon on Wednesday.
State secretary Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said the number increased from 2,162 people from 581 families this morning.
He said Segamat, Kluang, Kota Tinggi, Johor Bahru, Pontian and Kulai were affected by floods with Kluang recording the highest number of victims at 1,952 people from 518 families placed in 10 PPS.
"Segamat had 1,431 victims from 419 families in nine PPS. Kota Tinggi recorded 1,156 people from 259 families placed in 13 PPS.
"Johor Bahru recorded 1,004 victims from 296 families with nine PPS in operation while Kulai had 320 victims from 80 families in five PPS.
"Pontian was recently affected by floods causing 15 victims from three families to be placed in Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Melayu PPS," he said.
The Malaysian Meteorogical Department (MetMalaysia) predicted continuous heavy rains in the state until Thursday.
"11 rivers in Segamat, Kluang, Kulai, Pontian and Johor exceeded dangerous red warning levels. Among the rivers were Segamat River, Lenik River, Skudai River and Pontian Besar River," he said.
Azmi said the main roads to both Kluang and Segamat were flooded and closed to all vehicles.
"It involved the Kluang-Mersing road (Ladang Greenway FT050) in Kluang.
Mohd Salim road (FT172) however, could accommodate heavy vehicles only as the floods reached almost one metre.
"Bekok road (J150) and Kampung Tenang road (J151) in Segamat were closed for all vehicles as the floods reached close to a metre while Masai Lama Seksyen 21 road (J10) was closed completely due to a landslide," he said.
