AUKU: Policy changes must take into account various aspects

KUALA LUMPUR - Any government policy and legislation, including the repeal of the Universities and Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU) will take various aspects into account before a decision is made.
Before any decisions are made, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that the review of Auku must go through several processes.
"When discussing existing policy and legislation, several things must be taken into account, and it is certain that what's proposed will be brought through the correct process.
"This enables (us) to gain inputs from all stakeholders on what should be reviewed, repealed, or amended," he said during the Minister's Question Time in Dewan Rakyat, today.
This was in response to a question from Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (PN-Indera Mahkota) about whether the government would abolish AUKU.
On Feb 24, a news portal reported Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Norden as saying that the government has no proposals to abolish AUKU.
Khaled said the laws were still relevant, especially in terms of university administration, and the government was open to improving and increasing stakeholders' involvement in AUKU.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously released a statement saying that students are free to criticise the government.
