'Still sharp' Mahathir should write on politics, public policies, advices expert

SHAH ALAM - The political journey of former two-time Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is indeed interesting and colourful.

Joining Umno and becoming and representing the people at the late age of 55, the former president of the party for 22 years was also sacked and left the biggest Malay party for three years.

Now after Pejuang and Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) lost in the 15th general election (GE15) and with him losing his parliament seat in the Langkawi, Dr Mahathir continues to create controversy.

He then left Pejuang after an alleged misunderstanding with his son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz to join another ultra-Malay party, the Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra).

Mahathir turns 98 in July.

Many political observers have questioned when will Dr Mahathir retire or is he likely to continue in politics till 100?

Ilham Centre's Executive Director, Hisommudin Bakar said that his determination to be a politician until the end of his life as Dr Mahathir is known to work hard and is considered a 'political junkie'.

"There are psychologists who believe that if the individual does not continue the same daily routine after his old age, there is a possibility that Dr Mahathir's health will be affected if he chooses to be inactive.

"Dr Mahathir is an active man, In addition, he is still considered one of the greatest national thinkers," he told Sinar.

Meanwhile, veteran political analyst Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Wan Hashim Wan Teh said Dr Mahathir should retire so that the image of the statesman will continue to remain fertile in the minds of the people.

He said Dr Mahathir had contributed to the nation.

"However, his influence and popularity declined severely after choosing to resign suddenly in 2018.

"With his age, I am sure his influence is declining.

"For me, it is better for Tun M to become a writer in the field of politics and public policy because he is proven to still have a sharp thinking," he said.
