Students found vandalising school's property undergo community service

GEORGETOWN - A group of students will be subjected to community service for vandalising a building in Seberang Perai Selatan secondary school, here.

Penang State Education Department (JPN) said they want to ensure the action is not repeated.

In a statement, it said they had taken appropriate action by calling the students and their next of kin to discuss the matter.

"Moral education will be taken to prevent vandalism activities from repeating.

"The losses amounting from the vandalism are still under investigation," it said.

Previously, two videos of 28 and 58 seconds showing a group of male student vandalising school property after school session went viral on social media.

In the video, a group of students, believed to be attending the said school, were damaging school equipments such as chairs, fans and toilet doors.

In addition, Penang education department had asked all portals and social media to delete the videos that did not cover the students' faces as it was in conflict with Section 15 of the Child Act 2001.

The statement further said school administrators are often reminded to take appropriate measures to curb and prevent such behavior.

"We apologise for the incident and we will make sure the school will give serious attention to the issue," he said.

On Saturday, the Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry did not compromise with the acts of vandalism and violence committed by the students.
